Abstract

In many parts of the world, stagnant economies, rising inequality, and sluggish regional growth have renewed interest in and experimentation with industrial policy. This is the first of two special issues exploring the potential of industrial policy to act as a catalyst in reviving economies and enhancing growth in a sustained way. This first issue focuses specifically upon a particular facet of the industrial system that is the challenges posed by the advent of new technologies and the role of policy in enhancing innovation and transforming trajectories at regional, national and international levels.The second issue, in November 2019, focuses more on the place-based elements – beyond smart specialisation - of industrial policy.
